Sleepover Show #125: Ben Kweller
What started out as a quiet and comfortable afternoon in Ben Kweller’s mobile bedroom ended with him dancing around and finally crashing onto his bed. We were inside his tour bus, which he offered as an interesting place to film our set with him. We climbed aboard the bus, which was parked outside the Paradise, Kweller’s own name on the marquee reflecting off the windows. We’ve filmed in tour vans and buses before and imagined that Ben Kweller’s bus would not be dissimilar when he offered it as a place to do his set. We chatted for a few minutes before he said, “Sleepover Shows? Should I do this in the bedroom?” He headed to the back of the vehicle and began tuning his guitar as we assembled our gear and found places to wedge the cameras in the cozy room.
“Let’s start with On My Way,” he said, which we were more than happy to film. “We can ease into the new stuff after that.” After a nice, quiet version of On My Way, Kweller played a few songs of his newest album, Go Fly A Kite. A bit more animated now, Kweller began moving around the small space, making use of his confines, finally crashing back down on the bed after the last bit of Mean to Me.
It’s great to see musicians relaxed and in their own space, and that’s exactly how we felt about this show. Ben has a handful of dates left this summer here in the States—let’s hope he returns to Boston soon. We hope you enjoy the videos!
