Instrument Interview #3: Carolina Chocolate Drops
We first filmed Carolina Chocolate Drops last year at the Newport Folk Festival, and when we started our new Instrument Interview series we knew they’d be a perfect addition. Not only are they accomplished musicians, Hubby, Dom, and Rhiannon are thoughtful living historians of minstrelsy. Embracing the form, they have brought this complicated, controversial music to a new audience. In this wonderful interview, the band talk not only about their instruments but also the complex history of the form of music they play. With a mix of humor and dead-seriousness, Carolina Chocolate Drops talk to us about the gray areas of black face minstrelsy music–its roots as an Irish and African American form of expression, and how it informs their own craft. We hope you enjoy the videos!
