Sleepover Show #86: Guards

Posted by sleepovershows on Monday, November 21, 2011 · Leave a Comment

Sometimes even the best plans can go awry.  When we met up with Guards awhile back, they had a fantastic idea.  “Why don’t we crank our fog machine while we play?” Of course we said yes; this sounded like a fun idea, capturing them as they played, shrouded in the mist.  Their tour manager set up the machine, and pretty soon the space had the look of a horror film. The tendrils of fog drifted around their feet and enveloped them; the haze so heavy that, at certain points, you could see the band members breath, as though it were chilly indoors.  We filmed the first song as the band hung out right on the billiard tables at Brighton Music Hall.

All seemed well.  As the last notes dissipated, the room was quiet and still.  And then it happened: the smoke alarm.  Apparently, some fog machines will do this.  We were a bit horrified, hastily opening doors to air out the room.  The band made a quick escape out the back as their tour manager explained to the folks at Brighton just what happened.  Needless to say, they were not so thrilled.  Sound checks were now in danger, and the firemen were not going to be happy.  But in the end, it turned out alright.  Lesson learned, filmmakers: when you are told a fog machine won’t set off the alarms, double check.

Thankfully, we still got a few more tunes from Guards, which can all be found on their EP.

First up, I See It Coming.  We’re glad that we got the fog machine for at least the one tune, it really does look great.

Second, Resolution of One.  The back of the BMH building worked out well, there was even a ledge for the band to sit on.

Finally, Crystal Truth.

Tomorrow, November 22nd, 3 Syllables Records releases a limited edition vinyl version of the EP, only 500 have been pressed.  Snag yourself a copy if you can!

P.S. Though the fog machine incident was exciting in a sense, we do offer our sincerest apologies to the folks at BMH.  It is, and remains an incredible venue here in town, one you should frequent often.  Check out their listings here.
