Sleepover Show #104: The Milk Carton Kids

The Milk Carton Kids‘ Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale were arriving in just a short while and we just could not come up with a suitable place to film them. It was cold out, the places we checked off in our heads had been filmed at already, and we were pressed to find a unique space that suited their music. Sometimes when you least expect it, wonderful things happen.
The Ruggles Baptist Church was right nearby and a short chat with Pastor Larry yielded a whole beautiful building’s worth of rooms, corners, and marble stairwells to do the set. We were also allowed to go to the very tip top of the church, where an historic clock had just been finely tuned and repaired. Its gigantic gears rotated, the teeth clicking in perfect regularity. We’ll admit we were a bit hesitant to film up there, but the duo fell in love with the clock and the space immediately. After filming and editing the show, we can see and hear why they wished to perform alongside the aged timepiece, it is a show unlike any other. All three songs are from the band’s second album, Prologue.
First up, Michigan.
Second, I Still Want A Little More.
Last, Stealing Romance. The tick-tock of the clock and the sound of the gravel coating the floor of the unfinished room really cannot be ignored in this song, but we think it adds a little something.
The Milk Carton Kids are playing at Cafe 939 here in Boston on February, 29th. Be sure to check out their show. Also, a special thanks to The Ruggles Baptist Church for letting us use their facility.

Beautiful duo!… Was a bit disappointed that they didn’t actually u s e the clock’s ticking, but still…
(And a kickin’ site, too, thanks a bunch, it’s a priceless effort you put into it. Been checking you since the christopher paul stelling session.)
