Operators: Middle East Upstairs
On Saturday night, Dan Boeckner brought his new band Operators to the Middle East Upstairs to close out their tour. Playing songs off their new album, Blue Wave, they filled the small space with such a big sound that I’m sure folks at Middle East Downstairs could hear, which is saying a lot since usually the sound bleeds the other way around. Operators, with Boeckner on vocals and guitar, Devojka on synthesizer, and Sam Brown on drums, create a solid mix of Boeckner’s earlier groups Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, and Divine Fits. I would say the music is a nice stop-gap reprieve before Wolf Parade shares some new music and goes out on tour later this year, but Operators, despite its shared DNA, gave us more than just a side project. The infectious melodies combined with Boeckner’s guitar solos, Brown’s pounding drums, and Devojka’s driving synth kept the crowd dancing every minute. I hope they return to the studio and the road soon. Check out more photos on our Facebook page.
