Sleepover Show #44: Pearl and the Beard II

Posted by sleepovershows on Thursday, May 5, 2011 · 4 Comments

It was just about a year ago that our little website decided that we were either going to hang it up and go home or redouble our efforts to bring you great music each week.  Pearl and the Beard was one of the very first bands that we reached out to about what was really just a little blog that posted videos every now and again.  We were so happy that they said yes, and when they showed up at our old apartment in Allston we knew that we might be at the start of something special.  We are honored that we can now call Jeremy Jocelyn and Emily our friends–and even more so that they are officially our first repeating band.  We’d call it favoritism if not for the fact that they just play great music  we just have to share.

We met up with the band the night before when they played over at TT the Bear’s and watched their incredible live act.  Here is where Pearl and the Beard really shines.  If you can lull your audience from the quiet of an introspective song to the sing along, foot stomping of Douglas Douglass, you know what you are doing.  And that is exactly what P&tB does.  Their combined talent makes for such varying compositions that you can imagine their blended melodies wafting off a Broadway stage, the human-voiced cello telling you your dreams, the pounding drums inciting you to dance, and all the while having it fit right into an old barn-stomping jam–like an American folk-soul memory.

The morning after their TT’s set, we gathered together in a gravel yard, while the blue sky lightened our day, the wind blew through our hair, and the songs lightened our spirits.  One after another, Jeremy, Jocelyn and Emily traded off lead vocals as we moved through a few more songs off the new album.  Last time we filmed them, we kept them mostly indoors.  We should have known better.  As we filmed, their music filled the air, and we knew we were capturing yet another great set from the band.  We hope you agree.

Do yourself a favor.  Find these three on stage.  Listen to their songs, buy their albums, and tell your friends.  Pearl and the Beard will bring a tear to your eye just as quickly as they’ll bring a smile to your face and a bounce to your step.  We hope you enjoy the videos!
