Sleepover Show #43: Sodafrog
For some reason, the shows this week have a common thread. Both are Boston locals. Both invited us into their homes. And both had a pair of cats. Now, when we met Mean Creek, their two cats were shy. When we met Sodafrog in his apartment, and set down some microphones, the cats immediately went for them. As if the microphone was a strange animal that had invaded its territory, one of the cats starting nuzzling it, marking it as its own. We even had to start a song over after the cat rubbed up against it during a take. After they got used to our presence, though, the cats hung back just as we did, to enjoy the new songs from their owner.
And enjoy we did. Sitting between the shelves of records around his apartment, Sodafrog took out his notebook of lyrics and played for us one of the songs that can be found on his last release, Hang the Moon, as well as some unreleased ones–Wispy and Memories and Movements. There is a reason why Sodafrog was nominated for Best Folk Artist at last year’s Boston Music Awards; his guitar playing and storytelling can be wistful at times and foot stomping at others, telling tales of love, memories, dreams, and secrets that you can only discover while someone sleeps beside you.
We love supporting our local artists, and this week you’ll be able to do the same. Tonight, Sodafrog will be up on stage at the Brighton Music Hall–perhaps playing some of the songs you’ve seen right here. Go out and enjoy the tunes. We hope you enjoy the videos!
First, Memories and Movements:
Next, Like Dancing, which you can find on Hang the Moon:
And finally, Wispy. You have to love a line like this, “I spoke to your ghost and we both agree…”
And our trailer for the show. Scroll to :22 to see the cat and his new friend:
