Stephin Merritt: The Sinclair 6.9.15
Does the alphabet have its own crescendos, ebbs, and flows? Story structure? Do “Y” and “Z” fit as encore songs? Well, yes and no. But on Tuesday night at the Sinclair in Cambridge, it really didn’t matter. Stephin Merritt, accompanied by fellow Magnetic Field member Sam Davol, went through his discography, picking a song for each letter of the alphabet. With hundreds of songs to choose from, and with an entire album dedicated to the letter “i”, the exercise was fascinating. So, maybe “Zombie Boy” would not have been an encore choice on a different night, and getting the emotional punch of “Book of Love” in the first three minutes of a concert played with the expectations of how a concert usually plays out. But that was the point, after all, and with the ability to create a dozen other configurations of the show, the possibilities of the night were endless.
