Sleepover Show #17: Blue Giant
A lot can go wrong here at Sleepover Shows. Sometimes on the day of a shoot a singer will come down with a cold, a van might break down, the weather could severely limit our shooting locations, or everyone could realize that they just plain don’t have time. Of course, we understand when bands have to cancel last minute, and we’re always eager to film them next time they’re in town. But these setbacks did not deter Kevin Robinson... Read More
Sleepover Show #16: Breathe Owl Breathe
To all of you folks that did not make it to the Club Passim, Breathe Owl Breathe show: you should have been there. Club Passim had root beer floats, and lots of other tasty fare. It was cozy and had character. But the club was in need of a few extra people to join in when the band asked for audience participation, which was often. We at Sleepover Shows were more than happy to oblige that night, as earlier in the day we had cameras in our hands,... Read More
Sleepover Show #14: Harry and the Potters
Paul and Joe of Harry and the Potters wanted to make pancakes for their fans, and who were we to deny them? So, on a Saturday afternoon, as some of their wizarding cohorts started to trickle in, we prepped our kitchen, moved the furniture around, and waited for the crowd. The band showed up with more props than we’ve ever seen for a Sleepover Show. Stripped down the set may have been, but lacking in energy, masks, and a giant stuffed blue... Read More
Sleepover Show #13: OK Go
So, there we were in Guster’s trailer. Having shown up to the Life is Good Festival with scant details on just how we were going to film OK Go: all we knew was it would happen. After looking at various spots and finding no respite from either the wind or the other performances going on, one of the fest’s attendants suggested we commandeer the trailer of the Massachusetts natives. And so we did. They were not supposed to be there... Read More
Sleepover Show #12: Pearl and the Beard
Over the last three years, the living room of 154 Thorndike Street has hosted dozens of thankful bands and has forged lasting friendships. Sadly, we always knew the bittersweet day would come when we would have to leave that apartment, its drafty windows and hilariously painted walls for greener pastures. It was our distinct honor to have Pearl and the Beard in for our final Sleepover Show at 154. Showing up an hour early, Jocelyn, Emily and Jeremy... Read More
Sleepover Show #11: Math the Band
So, Blockbuster is bankrupt and us folks here at Sleepover Shows just had to check out the liquidation sale as we waited for a phone call from Math the Band, who were driving up from Rhode Island for their show at The Middle East. We found some movie steals mixed in with a lot of not so good titles, the phone rang, and we made our purchases. Crossing the busy intersection, we scanned the faces of all the people at the corner. Where could they... Read More
Sleepover Show #9: Howlies
Howlies is a big reason Sleepover Shows was started, so it’s fitting that they are the first band to test out our new website. Howlies first caught my eye in December of 2008, on their tour with the now defunct The King Left. The band played TT The Bears in Central Square. That night, I asked Corey Oliver from The King Left about their support band, Atlanta’s Howlies. “If I could be in any band,” he said, drink in hand, “it would be Howlies.”... Read More
Sleepover Show #8: Lady Lamb the Beekeeper
I can tell you about the flood in my dreams until we both fall asleep. The last line of Lady Lamb the Beekeeper’s, Mexico, ME, —a song she played for us right after we crowded into her car to hide from the rain, is a good summation of her songs. A combination of the sweet and the sadness of life, pairing well with her voice, which slides from low hums and scratchy half-yells to quiet croons, she has the ability to encapsulate the musings of a... Sleepover Show #7: A Bit Much
We were surprised to see local boys A Bit Much show up with a full drum kit. It’s something that we at Sleepover Shows are not used to. We work with the band to come up with fun ways to explore the space and their own songs. We go acoustic. We have a good time exploring. The bands use boxes and doors and garbage cans for percussion sometimes. A Bit Much’s aesthetic is precision and had even practiced their stripped down set in preparation for... Read More
Sleepover Show #6: Saintseneca
Saintseneca appears at first to be quiet and unassuming, as do their songs. They look like the kind of people you would like to be friends with. Like you could have sat next to them in English class and that they’d all understand the poetry section really well. You can bet they all did really well in the poetry section because their lyrics and melodies have hints of the best sort of poetry there is: songs about love, murdering out west, and...
